Challenge
Ukraine has limited capacity to store spent nuclear fuel and must pay to ship some of the waste to Russia.
Solution and Impact
$250 million in political risk insurance supported construction of a spent nuclear fuel storage facility in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. With capacity to store 169,000 tons of spent fuel each year, the new facility will reduce the need to ship spent fuel to Russia and help Ukraine move closer to energy independence. The project also generated significant business for Holtec International of Camden, New Jersey, such is manufacturing storage casks for the facility.
