Challenge
Potash is an essential ingredient in the fertilizer that is critical to food security in Africa. However, Africa currently relies heavily on imports of potash from overseas producers, including Russia and Belarus. The war in Ukraine has disrupted these supply chains, exposing Africa’s agricultural sector to supply shocks.
Solution and Impact
To support Africa’s self-sufficiency in agriculture, DFC committed $3 million in project development support to help Millennial Potash advance development of Africa’s first-ever potash mine, located in northern Gabon at the site of a large potash deposit.
This support will help Millennial Potash complete a definitive feasibility study to evaluate the technical, logistical, and economic factors that will determine the project’s viability for eventual DFC financing to support a processing plant and related infrastructure. Millennial is also in discussions with local off-takers in Africa that would help ensure a significant increase in local supply.
DFC’s support will significantly accelerate the project development timeline.
