When the sun goes down in rural India, most signs of life disappear. Approximately 400 million people in India live in remote villages that are not connected to an electricity grid. Lacking electricity for even basic lighting, businesses close, and children can no longer play outside, or even study indoors.
Solution and Impact
A $3 million loan helped Simpa Energy India introduce off-grid solar to energy-poor households and microenterprises and is working to provide off-grid solar power to tens of thousands of families and small businesses.
“When we provide even four more hours of light each night, we give people more time to work, more time to play, more time to be together, more time for conversation,” said Simpa President and co-founder Paul Needham. “We not only provide four more hours of light, we provide four more hours of life ... every day.”
